Provided are: an optically active form of mepenzolate bromide; and an ameliorating agent for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which contains the optically active form as an active ingredient and of which the activity relies on a bronchodilatory activity and an anti-inflammatory activity. (3R)- or (3S)-3-[(hydroxy)(diphenyl)acetoxy]-1,1-dimethyl- piperidinium bromide (also referred to as "(R)- or (S)-mepenzolate bromide"). An ameliorating agent for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, which contains the (R)- or (S)-mepenzolate bromide as an active ingredient; or an ameliorating agent for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease as mentioned above, of which the route of administration is the administration through the respiratory tract or the administration through inhalation. |
