At least one of the plural DPUs provides a switching signal to the receivers to switch the state of the active receiver to standby and the state of the standby receiver to active as a function of a quality measurement of the received data stream via the traffic channel. |

1. A method for providing distributed protection switching in a communication system, comprising the steps of:
receiving a first data stream by a first communication module having an active state and a standby state, the first communication module being in the active state; receiving a second data stream by a second communication module, the second communication module having an active state and a standby state, the second communication module being in the standby state, the first and second data stream containing similar information; measuring by the first communication module a characteristic of the first data stream to generate a first quality measurement; measuring by the second communication module the characteristic of the second data stream to generate a second quality measurement; providing by the first communication module the first quality measurement to a first data processing unit (DPU) and a second DPU; providing by the second communication module the second quality measurement to the first DPU and the second DPU; determining by at least one of the first DPU or the second DPU a switching decision based on the first quality measurement and the second quality measurement; and providing by the at least one of the first DPU or the second DPU a switching signal in response to the switching decision to switch the first communication module to the standby state and switch the second communication module to the active state. |
