PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To extract an accurate specific area according to a subject.SOLUTION: A subject detection device includes: a binarization processing unit that determines a threshold to binarize an image of a processing object by using the average pixel value of the image of the processing object, and creates a binarized image binarized with the threshold; an evaluation value calculation unit that calculates an evaluation value indicating the characteristics of a subject for a pixel area extracted with the binarized image; an extraction unit that extracts the pixel area corresponding to a specific area of the image of the processing object by using the evaluation value; and a clipping unit that fixes the average pixel value to a first limit value when the average pixel value exceeds the first limit value, and fixes the average pixel value to a second limit value when the average pixel value is less than the second limit value.
