The light fitting has a tubular gas discharge lamp (1), an adjacent concave reflector (2) and a partially-reflective light diffuser (3) positioned in front of the reflector, cooperating with the reflector for providing divergent light chambers (4) on either side of the lamp. The ratio between the width (a) of the light output surface of each divergent light chamber to the height (b) of its light input surface is at least 4:1.
