A lavatory cleansing block comprising an alkane sulphonate in an amount of 15-40% wt of the block, a carboxymethylcellulose and a hydrophobe, the total weight of the block being 5-35g, preferably 5-25g. Preferably the alkane sulphonate is sodium alkylbenzene sulphonate, the carboxymethylcellulose has a viscosity of 1000-8000cP at 25oC and a degree of substitution of 0.6-1.45 and the hydrophobe is selected from a terpene, a C9-11 primary alcohol, a non-ionic surfactant, a perfume or mixtures thereof, being more preferably pine oil or a mixture thereof with C9-11 primary alcohols. The toilet cleaning block may also contain a dye such as Acid Blue 9, additional surfactants, such as an alpha-olefin sulphonate, a density control agent, such as sodium sulphate, a filler, such as magnesium sulphate, a preservative, such as sodium orthophenylphenate etc. Preferred amounts are 2-15% wt for carboxymethylcellulose, 2-10% wt for the hydrophobe and 0.5-10% wt for the dye. The block is preferably free of guar gum and phosphorus-containing compounds. It is preferably placed in the cistern of a toilet, has a toilet life of at least 7 days and leaves less than 3% wt residue at the end of its useful life. |
