[Class 75(i)] An oil burner with an annular combustion zone formed by inner and outer walls of refractory or heat-insulated material has the inner wall sloping outwardly and downwardly and is provided with means for distributing fuel over the sloping surface of the inner wall, air being supplied through the outer wall to the combustion zone to create a rotary and/or turbulent movement of the gases. The apparatus comprises an inner refractory and/or heat-insulated cone 5 centred on a plate 4 by a flange 4a and fitted over a heat-insulating substance 9, an outer cylindrical wall 6 having radially offset transverse air inlet passages 29, and a central pipe 7 for the supply of liquid fuel which fuel passes thence to radially extending channels 14 on to a number of radial grooves formed in a casting 13 to be distributed evenly over the surface of cone 5. Primary air passes through ports 2 to an air pre-heating chamber 19, formed by a shell 20 into the combustion zone 28 through passages 29. Tins 21 formed on and extending through shell 20 and overlapping the upper region of the combustion zone convey heat to the pre-heating chamber 19. Secondary air passes through passages 10, 8 and 26, to a cavity 16 in an upper casting 17 and thence to a channel 17a and into the combustion zone 28. The burner is lit by a string 30 of non-combustible material located in a fuel overflow pipe 23 and joined at its inner end to a ring wick 24 also of heat-resistant material. The burner may be provided with a safety cut-off valve operated by the excess fuel issuing from pipe 23. |
