A control system and method for controlling a transmission of a vehicle, the method comprising receiving or estimating at least one measurement relating to a hydraulic lag 86, due to increased oil viscosity, or some other cold condition parameter, of a continuously variable valve lift (CVVL) system, such as, oil temperature, high cold current draw, hydraulic excitations, and mechanical forces. The CVVL system being associated with an engine of the vehicle. Further comprising estimating a value for the hydraulic lag or other parameter and determining, based on the value of the hydraulic lag or other parameter, an engine speed threshold 88 above which engine power output is impaired. Then monitoring the engine speed, and generating an alert or signal if the engine speed exceeds the engine speed threshold 98. The transmission may be either manual or automatic and the alert may instruct the user to change gear 94, or may directly control an automatic transmission. |
