A method for identifying data residing on a volume in a multivolume file system, comprising: generating a file location map, the file location map containing a list of the locations of files that occupy space on each of a plurality of volumes of the file system, the file system comprising at least a first volume and a second volume; updating the file location map in accordance with changes in a file change log for the file system; identifying data residing on the first volume of the file system by scanning the file location map; determining whether to relocate the data residing on the first volume to the second volume by scanning the file location map and based on a predetermined relocation policy, wherein when the data residing on the first volume is relocated to the second volume the data is not maintained on the first volume; updating the file location map when the data residing on the first volume is relocated to the second volume; examining the file change log for additional changes in the file system other than relocation of the data based on the predetermined relocation policy, wherein the file change log comprises a record of changes to file system metadata other than the relocation of the data based on the predetermined relocation policy; updating the file location map in accordance with the examination of the file change log; determining whether the predetermined relocation policy has been modified; and determining whether to whether to relocate the data residing on the first volume when the predetermined relocation policy has been modified and based on the file location map, wherein the determination of whether to relocate the data residing on the first volume is further based on a comparison of file activity, overall file system, and a plurality of thresholds.
