The present invention provides a user terminal and a method for controlling the same whereby contents can be shared by simple input. A user terminal of the present invention includes: a display unit which can display a screen of contents; a communication unit which can communicate with a device of a counterpart; a user input unit which receives user input; and a control unit which selects one from multiple transmission methods for transmitting contents based on display status either of the user terminal or the device of a counterpart and controls information for the contents between the user terminal and the terminal of the counterpart to be transmitted by the determined transmission method. The present invention can provide the user terminal and a method for controlling the same whereby a user can share contents by transmitting/receiving the contents to/from the device of the counterpart by easy and convenient input to the user terminal without performing complicated and difficult procedures such as setting of a transmission method and a connection method for sharing contents.
