A gyratory crusher outer crushing shell (106). The outer crushing shell comprises an upper contact surface region (128) that is divided into a plurality of elongate circumferentially extending shoulders (204). The shoulders are separated by recessed gap regions (200) adapted to accommodate a suitable backing material to structurally reinforce the shell. A channel (201) extends circumferentially around the shell in the outward facing surface to axially separate the upper contact surface region from a lower contact surface region (129). The channel is also adapted to accommodate the backing material.
