PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for forming a solution containing isolated capsule polysaccharide of Streptococcus pneumonia having phosphodiester linkages between the sugar repeating units.SOLUTION: The method of the invention supplies COto a fermentation culture of Streptococcus pneumoniae cells that produce a capsular polysaccharide serotype having phosphodiester linkages between the sugar repeating units. The exemplary pneumococcal serotypes include 6A, 6B, 19A and 19F. COcan be supplied to the fermentation culture by adding bicarbonate ions to the fermentation culture, by adding carbonate ions to the fermentation culture, by adding a mixture of bicarbonate and carbonate ions to the fermentation culture, or by aerating the fermentation culture with CO. |
