[Class 123(iii)] A return bend a of a steam superheater, &c. element is protected by a cap b of heat - resisting steel, &c. which is provided with apertures c for the reception of weld metal d; the cap may also be welded to the bend wholly or in part along its edge or lip e. The cap is adapted snugly to fit the bend, or, alternatively, the whole or the major portion of the inner surface of the cap is spaced slightly from the bend, or is ribbed or grooved, the space or spaces f between said surface and the bend being filled with weld metal d<SP>1</SP> through the apertures c. The weld metal d in the apertures c may be capped by weld metal g having a higher heat-resisting characteristic. Preferably the cap is of. such size that its greatest dimension in any direction normal to the axes of the tubes joined by the bend does not exceed the maximum dimension of the bend in the same direction.</p> |
