PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an ink jet recording device and an image forming method which can reduce interruption frequency of image formation while preventing formation of a deteriorated image caused by discharge failure of ink. ! SOLUTION: An ink jet recording device forms an image on a recording medium by discharging respective ink from a plurality of nozzles based on image data. The ink jet recording device includes: a reading part which reads a test image formed by ink discharged from the plurality of nozzles on the recording medium; a discharge failure detection part which detects ink discharge failure of the nozzle from the read test image; and a formation range changing part which moves an image formation range in which the image is normally formed on the recording medium to a position where a discharge failure nozzle is not used based on a position of the discharge failure nozzle relating to the detected ink discharge failure and normal image data to be formed. !
