Described herein are compounds for and methods of treating conditions or diseases in a subject by administering to the subject a pharmaceutical composition containing an effective amount of an α-adrenergic modulator. The compounds and methods are also useful for alleviating types of pain, acute, neuropathic and chronic.

A method of treating a condition or disease in a mammal, the method comprising administering a compound having a structure wherein: R1 and R2 are each independently selected from hydrogen, halogen, C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 alkoxy, OH, NR′2, CN, CO2R′, C(O)NR′R″, C1-4 halogenated alkyl, C1-4 halogenated alkoxy, substituted or unsubstituted aryl, and substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl; R′ is selected from hydrogen, C1-4 alkyl, C1-4 halogenated alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted aryl, and substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl; and R″ is selected from hydrogen, C1-4 alkyl, substituted or unsubstituted aryl, and substituted or unsubstituted heteroaryl; wherein the disease or condition is selected from glaucoma, elevated intraocular pressure, optical neuropathy, corneal pain and diabetic retinopathy.
