A combined guide rail (36) for an elevator system (10) includes a car guide rail (28) portion to guide an elevator car (12) along an elevator car travel path and a counterweight guide rail (32) portion to guide a counterweight (22) of the elevator system along a counterweight travel path. A connecting portion (46) extends from the car guide rail (28) portion to the counterweight guide rail (32) portion. The car guide rail (28) portion, the counterweight guide rail (32) portion and the connecting portion (46) are formed together as a single unitary structure from a single piece of material.
