PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an oxidation catalyst for exhaust gas purification which is available for an exhaust gas from a diesel engine, has improved heat resistance and high low-temperature activity, and a method for producing the catalyst.SOLUTION: An oxidation catalyst for exhaust gas purification contains a catalyst component carried on a refractory inorganic oxide, and a metal component. The catalyst component is platinum, or platinum and palladium, and the metal component is one or more selected from the group consisting of magnesium, calcium, strontium and barium. Each component is carried on the refractory inorganic oxide by an impregnation method.
