Blue-fluorescent compounds of the general formula <FORM:0665415/IV (b)/1> where R is a methoxy radical attached to a position 4 or 5, n is 1 or 2 and M is hydrogen or a cation such as sodium, potassium, ammonium, trimethylammonium or pyridinium, are prepared by forming a bis-amido condensation product of 1 mol. of a 4,41-diaminostilbene-2,21-disulphonic acid with 2 mols. of a benzoic acid or benzoyl chloride carrying in the nucleus two or three methoxy groups, one of these groups being in the 2-position and the other group or groups being in one or both of the positions 4, 5. In examples: (1) the 2,4-dimethoxy compound is made by reacting 4,41-diaminostilbene-2,21-disulphonic acid with 2,4-dimethoxy-benzoic acid in the presence of phosphorus oxychloride and pyridine; (2) the same compound is made by heating together 4,41-diaminostilbene-2,21-disulphonic acid, 2,4-dimethoxybenzoic acid, diethyl cyclohexylamine, xylene, toluene and phosphorus oxychloride; (3) a mixture of 4,41-diaminostilbene - 2,21 - disulphonic acid, 2,4,5-trimethoxybenzoic acid, phosphorus oxychloride and pyridine is treated to give the sodium salt of 4,41-bis-(2,4,5-trimethoxybenzoylamino)-stilbene-2, 21-disulphonate; and (4) a mixture of 4,41diaminostilbene-2,21disulphonic acid, 2,5-dimethoxybenzoic acid, phosphorus oxychloride and pyridine is treated to give the sodium salt of 4,41 - bis - (2,5 - dimethoxybenzoylamino) - stilbene-2,21-disulphonate. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 660,868.ALSO:The blue-fluorescent compounds 4,41-bis-(2,4 - dimethoxybenzoylamino) - stilbene - 2,21 - disulphoni acid, 4,41 - bis - (2,5 - dimethoxybenzoylamino) - stilbene - 2,21 - disulphonic acid, and 4,41-bis-(2,4,5-trimethoxybenzoylamino)-stilbene-2, 21-disulphonic acid are used as brightening agents for textile materials.
