A method of controlling interactions between fluid compartments or droplets 10 in a fluid flow comprises providing a first phase 14 within a fluid conduit 20, enclosing within the first phase a separating compartment of a second phase 12 that is immiscible with the first phase, providing at least one reagent compartment of a third phase 10 that is immiscible with the second phase and enclosed by the separating compartment; and arranging the compartments such that the length of the separating compartment is equal to or greater than the conduit diameter. Ideally, the reagent compartment has a length equal to or greater than the conduit diameter. In use, the phases have different velocities of travel along the conduit due to their properties. Ideally, the properties of the second and third phases are chosen so that the reagent compartments merge. The method provides control of three phase or double emulsion systems. |
