An imaging module for use with an aircraft 2 has a rigid support structure 26 including means for releasably attaching to the aircraft 2. A position sensor 30 and orientation sensor 32 are mounted on the rigid support structure 26. A steerable turret 28 is mounted to the rigid support structure, at least part of the turret 28 has a fixed position with respect to the rigid support structure 26. One or more processors 22 are configured to determine a current position and a current orientation of the imaging sensor 20; acquire a position on the ground 8 of a target to be imaged; using the determined current position and current orientation of the imaging sensor 20, control the turret 28 to direct the imaging sensor 20 towards the position on the ground 8 of a target to be imaged; thereafter, control the imaging sensor 20 to image the target; and process images captured by the imaging sensor 20 so as to convert the images into a predetermined image format. The module may be used on an unmanned aircraft for surveying of an area of terrain. |
