An apparatus and method is for countersinking the hole formed in a curved aircraft panel. A drilling apparatus includes a pressure foot and a cutting tool. The foot has a passage for the tool to pass through. The first digital model 104 of the aircraft panel includes a model of the hole 102. The second digital model of the foot 106 includes a model of the passage 44. Processor/s are configured to: arrange the models such that the axes of the models of the hole and passage are aligned; determine a first distance, d; determine a second distance being the sum of a distance between the tool and the foot, the first distance, and a predetermined depth to which to the hole is to be countersunk. A controller is configured to control the drilling apparatus to perform the countersinking process including moving the foot such that its front surface is in contact with the curved surface of the aircraft panel, such that an axis of the hole is aligned with an axis of the passage and moving the tool through the passage to countersink the hole. The distance through which the tool is moved equals the determined second distance. |
