Protection method for an electric energy storage source, in particular a motor vehicle battery

The method involves measuring charge level of an energy storage source (2), and applying an electrical excitation to a polyphase rotating electrical machine (1) connected to the source, during a preset operating mode of the machine, where the level is represented by voltage measured at terminals of the source or a pulse width modulation signal. A measured value of the level is compared with a reference value (Max-SP) selected from a larger value among internal and external setpoints (REF-EXT, REF-INT). The excitation is interrupted if the measured value is higher than the reference value. An independent claim is also included for a regulator for an electrical machine e.g. alternator and alterno-starter, comprising a field controller.
