摘要 PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a liquid crystal lens capable of forming a smooth lens-shaped phase distribution by controlling an orientation of liquid crystal molecules, and suppressing the deterioration of image quality due to the existence of a spacer; and a base material used for manufacturing the liquid crystal lens.SOLUTION: A liquid crystal lens 1 comprises a first substrate 2; a second substrate 3 disposed oppositely to the first substrate 2; a plurality of electrodes 41 provided on the first substrate 2 separately from each other; an entire surface electrode 5 provided on the second substrate 3 over the entire surface; a liquid crystal layer 8 formed by sealing a liquid crystal material between the first substrate 2 and the second substrate 3; and a spacer 9 provided at a position, on the first substrate 2, minimizing an electric field applied on the liquid crystal layer 8 when voltage is applied to the electrode 41 and the entire surface electrode 5. According to a longitudinal direction of liquid crystal molecules in a state where the electric field is not applied on the liquid crystal layer 8, difference between a refraction index nand nto abnormal light or normal light of the liquid crystal material and a refraction index nof a material configuring the spacer 9 is made to be within ± 0.05.
