<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To remove noise effectively while suppressing blur at an edge. <P>SOLUTION: An NR part 20 has a line memory 21, an LPF circuit 23, an edge amount calculation circuit 24, a mixing coefficient calculation circuit 26, and first and second computing elements 28a and 28b. The line memory 21 specifies an attention pixel signal and a first peripheral pixel signal from a stored pixel signal. The LPF circuit 23 calculates a weighted average value of the attention pixel signal and the first peripheral pixel signal to generate a primary noise removal signal. The edge amount calculation circuit 24 calculates an edge amount by using the attention pixel signal, the first peripheral pixel signal, and the primary noise removal signal. The mixing coefficient calculation circuit 26 calculates a variation coefficient by using the edge amount. The first computing element 28a generates a first differential signal by subtracting the primary noise removal signal from the attention pixel signal.
