The present invention is directed to composite films containing nanostructures within a polymer or monomeric matrix which composite may be formed on a metallic substrate and subsequently removed to provide bulk material. The nanostructures and polymer or monomer matrix may be assembled electrophoretically by initially providing a mixture of the nanostructures and polymer or monomer matrix material within generally anhydrous environments such as polar aprotic solvents followed by deposition of the composite film material. |

1. A method of forming a composite material containing nanostructures comprising:
mixing nanostructured solids with a vinyl-sulfonate and an ionic surfactant to form vinyl-sulfonate, ionic surfactant-coated nanostructured solids; mixing said vinyl-sulfonate, ionic surfactant-coated nanostructured solids in an organic liquid media so as to form a mixture, wherein said media has a water content of less than or equal to 10.0% by volume and said organic liquid media includes an organic polymerizable matrix material or polymers of the formula:wherein R1 and R2 may be selected from hydrogen, alkyl groups, alkylene groups, aromatic groups, ester groups, carboxylic acid groups and metal salts thereof, wherein n has a value of 10-10,000;
applying an electric field to said mixture in the presence of a conductive substrate; and depositing on said conductive substrate a composite material containing said nanostructured solids and said organic matrix material. |
