Class 46 An element for demulsifying and/or filtering' fluids comprises a chamber 50 containing fibrous material such as glass fibre and a plurality of partitions 58 dividing the fibrous material into separate sections for minimizing the tendency of the material to settle, the partitions being each secured to the upper wall 52 of the chamber by an impervious strip 60 extending downwardly from the upper wall so as to direct the fluid into the fibrous material of the succeeding section thus ensuring that all fluid passes through the material. As shown, the element 16 is formed by two coaxial cylinders 50, 56 of porous material joined at each end by annular plates 52 54, plate 52 being secured to plate 32, so that one end of the element, viz. 54 is formed with a hole and the partitions 58 are secured to the top plate 52 by angular impervious strips 60 extending downwardly. The outer cylinder 50 is made of rather porous longitudinally pleated paper impregnated with e.g. a polymerized phenolic resin to make it resistant to water, gasoline, kerosene &c. The inner cylinder 56 is made of wire screen. The partitions 58 are made of coarsely woven material such as onion skin cloth or wire screen. The element 16 is located in the tank 12 of a demulsifying device for separating water from a mixture of gasolene and water between an entry port 14 at one end and an outlet port 20 at the other end. The mixture first passes through the element 16 then downwardly through passage 26 into the lower portion of tank 12. The gasolene containing the water in comparatively large droplets formed as the mixture passes through the glass fibre of the element 16, separates from the water and passes upwardly around the outside of chamber 24 through a plurality of edge-type filters 36, through chamber 38 to the outlet 20. The water separating out in the lower portion of tank 12 collects in a sump and passes from the device through conduit 22 which is controlled by a float-actuated valve 42. The filters 36 remove foreign particles and droplets of water carried by the gasolene from the lower part of the tank 12. |
