A method for extruding metals comprising inserting between the ingot and the die an incombustible material having a viscous melting, e.g. glass, to act as a lubricant, is characterized in that at least a part of said material is used in the form of a fibrous mass. In an embodiment a parcel of glass fibre 4 is placed between the die 6 and a glass plate 5 in a container 1 before the ingot 3 is extruded through the die by the plunger 2. The glass fibre parcel may be placed between the ingot 3 and the glass plate 5 or the glass plate may be placed between two glass fibre parcels or several glass plates and fibre parcels in any order may be interposed.
