摘要 A method of fabricating a perpendicular magnetic recording (PMR) head with a multi-level tapered write pole which creates an efficient channeling of magnetic flux to the pole tip. A tapered bottom yoke is first formed in an etched substrate and a write pole is formed on the tapered bottom yoke. The write pole comprises a main pole with a tapered tip. A tapered top yoke is then formed on the write pole and symmetrically positioned relative to the bottom yoke. The edge of each yoke is recessed from the ABS of the tapered tip, giving the write pole a stepped profile. The tapered tip can be two sloped surfaces that are symmetric about a mid-plane of the main pole or a single sloped edge on the leading side or the trailing side of the pole.

A method of forming a multi-level tapered write pole for a PMR head, comprising: providing a substrate having a planar surface; forming in said substrate a trench, wherein a front portion of said trench is bounded by a front edge and a face extending therefrom into said substrate perpendicular to said substrate planar surface and said trench includes a downward sloped region extending rearward from said face and a flat region parallel to said substrate planar surface extending rearward thereafter; forming a bottom yoke in said trench, whereby said downward sloped region defines a second taper on said bottom yoke and wherein a front edge of said bottom yoke is defined by said front edge of said trench; planarizing said bottom yoke; forming a main pole over said planarized bottom yoke, a front, edge of said main pole extending forward beyond said front edge of said bottom yoke and defining an ABS of said main pole; forming a top yoke layer on said main pole, wherein said top yoke is vertically above and horizontally coextensive with said bottom yoke; forming on said top yoke layer a downward sloped region substantially mirror symmetric with respect to said downward sloped region in said bottom yoke; shaping said main pole to produce thereon a first taper; wherein said first taper ends a distance, d, before said front edge of said bottom yoke begins.
