a first processing unit; a first communication interface coupled to the first processing unit; a second communication interface; and an electric-field capacitive coupler apparatus, embedded in a multi-layer printed circuit board (PCB), that defines an isolation barrier coupled between the first communication interface and the second communication interface, the electric-field capacitive coupler apparatus including a first portion configured to electrically-coupled to a receiver and a second portion configured to electrically-coupled to a driver, the first portion including a first electrically-conductive plate disposed on a first layer of the PCB and a second electrically-conductive plate disposed on a second layer of the PCB.
