In a sorting machine of the type having a device for comparing data automatically settable in two columns of differentially settable registering elements such as racks or slides, there is provided manually-operable means associated with one column to set in data manually to the exclusion of any automatic setting, the primary purpose being to dispense with a master card which would be sensed repeatedly until ultimate damage resulted to the perforations. Fig. 1 shows two such slides 11 and 12 differentially set by plungers 5 co-acting with members 3 and 4, sliding blocks 1 and 2 and interconnecting links 6 pivoted at 7 and 9. The left-hand side of the apparatus is further provided with an inclined wedge 17 sliding in suitable guides and operated by a handle 16a. A spring loaded detent 26 cooperating with grooves 24 in the underside of plate 19 positions the wedge accurately for settings 0 to 9. The wedge 17 is so made that when it is displaced to the right by moving the handle 16a to any of the positions 0-9, the slide 11 is displaced by the correct amount by engagement of the pin 30 by the wedge 17. During each machine cycle combs 13 oscillate to remove the amount previously set in to the differential members 11, 12, by the plungers 5. In order to prevent oscillation of the left-hand comb after manually setting a number, so that the manually set displacement of slide 11 remains until removed manually, an extension piece 32 is fixed to the comb 13 and is engaged by a pawl 33 pivoted at 34. When the handle 16a is in the zero position a pin 36 engages the tail 37 of the pawl 33 and keeps it out of the way of the member 32 which is then free to oscillate with the comb 13. On moving the handle 16a to any other setting with vertical displacement of the member 11 the pawl 33 urged by the spring 35 engages the extension piece 32 and prevents oscillation of the comb 13 while the manual setting remains.
