<p>The invention relates to a method of initializing a remote-reading device intended to be hooked up to a meter (C). The remote-reading device and the meter each exhibit a visible identifying marking (IC, IB). When the remote-reading device is fitted, - a photograph of the meter and of the remote-reading device is taken so that the markings of one and the other are visible therein with the value displayed by the mechanical totalizer (TM) of the meter, - a shape recognition processing (OCR) is implemented on the photograph.
