DETECTING SYNTHETIC GEMSTONES USING IMAGE PROCESSING

An apparatus and a method for detecting synthetic gemstones using image processing are described herein. The apparatus includes an illumination means (104) for illuminating a gemstone (102) by a laser beam (106). When the laser beam (106) strikes the gemstone (102), a reflection/refraction pattern is produced on a screen (110). An image of the reflection pattern is captured by an image capturing device (112) mounted opposite to the screen (110). This image is fed to a computing device (114) for processing the captured image to determine a plurality of white spots. Further, co-ordinates of these white spots are identified and based on these co-ordinates, a final pattern of the image is obtained. The final pattern of the gemstone (102) is analyzed to identify whether the gemstone (102) is synthetic.
