<p>A cooking appliance (fig 1) for a cooking hob has a vessel containing a chamber and a magnetic key having plural magnets (fig 4, 206) providing a code that identifies at least one characteristic of the appliance. A cooking hob (fig 5) comprises a controller 602 connected to a driver 604 of an inductive coil 510 and a magnetic key decoder 612 comprising plural magnetic field sensors such as Hall effect sensors. When the magnetic key is placed proximal the decoder it provides a code to the controller indicating a characteristic of a cooking appliance associated with the key. The power output of the induction coil can be controlled depending on the characteristic which can relate to a type of appliance or a cooking profile including cooking temperature and time. The magnetic key can be releasable mounted in a lid or handle of the appliance and include a key-shaped position interlock. The magnetic key can be replaced with a switch key having switch engaging regions (fig 14, 1406) to engage plural switches in the decoder to provide the code indicating the appliance characteristic.</p> |
