A method for detecting an impurity in a non-polar material, comprising: irradiating the non-polar material with a beam of electromagnetic radiation having at least one frequency in a range of about 100 GHz to about 10 THz such that at least a portion of the electromagnetic radiation beam interacts with the impurity in the non-polar material resulting in electromagnetic radiation emerging from the non-polar material; detecting an intensity level of the emergent electromagnetic radiation from the non-polar material; and identifying an impurity characteristic of the impurity in the non-polar material based, at least in part, on the detected intensity level of the electromagnetic radiation as influenced by the interaction of the electromagnetic radiation beam with the impurity.
