A matrix convertor converts input three-phase AC power directly to three-phase AC power and outputs the converted three-phase AC power to a load, the matrix convertor comprising: a bidirectional switching circuit for turning the supply of the input three-phase AC power to the load on and off; and a control unit for generating a switching pattern for the bidirectional switching circuit such that the matrix convertor performs an AC to DC virtual conversion for the input three-phase AC power, which is different for each of a plurality of modes classified in accordance with the magnitude relationship of the line-to-line voltages of the phases in the input three-phase AC power, selects two phases of the input three-phase AC power, and performs a DC to AC virtual conversion for the line-to-line voltage of the selected two-phases, which is different for each of the plurality of modes. |
