An automatic nesting method which determines an arrangement pattern for arranging a plurality of components in a plate-shaped or sheet-shaped starting material having prescribed dimensions comprises: a first step of determining a first arrangement pattern in which the plurality of components are arranged in the starting material; a second step of obtaining a first yield for the first arrangement pattern from the surface area of the first arrangement pattern and the surface area of the starting material; a third step of reducing the dimensions of the starting material by a prescribed amount; a fourth step of determining a second arrangement pattern in which the plurality of components are arranged in the starting material having reduced dimensions; and a fifth step of obtaining a second yield for the second arrangement pattern from the surface area of the second arrangement pattern and the surface area of the starting material having reduced dimensions. The third, fourth and fifth steps are repeated to obtain an nth yield (where n is an integer ≥ 1), and an optimal yield from among the first yield to the nth yield is obtained.
