PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To easily obtain a polyarylene sulfide having high melt viscosity and excellent spinnability without increasing its molecular weight.SOLUTION: A polyarylene sulfide with carboxylate content of more than 100 μmol/g and less than 400 μmol/g has an organic acid metal salt or inorganic acid metal salt in a molar ratio 0.1-5 relative to the carboxylate content added thereto for cleaning, so that a polyarylene sulfide having high melt viscosity is obtained.
