The invention relates to the field of homogeneous catalysis and concerns the production of a catalyst for the metathesis polymerization of dicyclopentadiene. A ruthenium catalyst for the polymerization of dicyclopentadiene consists of [1,3-bis-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-2-imidazolidinylidene]chloro(2-((2-(dimethylaminoethylmethylamino)methyl)benzylidene) ruthenium chloride in the cationic form of formula: (I). Used in the structure of the catalyst is a fundamentally novel substituent, providing for novel catalyst characteristics allowing for carrying out the controllable polymerization of dicyclopentadiene depending on a set polymerization temperature. The catalyst is produced by reacting a triphenylphosphine ruthenium complex with 1,1-diphenyl-2-propyn-1-ol in tetrahydrofuran or dioxane at the boiling point of the solvent in an inert atmosphere and then, the resulting indenylidene ruthenium complex is recovered with tricyclohexylphosphine at room temperature in an inert atmosphere. The indenylidene ruthenium complex is reacted with 1,3-bis-(2,4,6-trimethylphenyl)-2-trichloromethylimidazolidine and 2-vinylbenzylamine of formula: (II), after which the produced compound is stirred in dichloromethane at room temperature in an inert atmosphere, and the resulting product is recovered from the reaction mixture and dried. The invention allows for setting, with a high level of precision, a start time and a polymerization rate, allows for high catalyst yield, catalyst activity and purity, allows for minimizing incidental impurities in the synthesis process, for expanding technological capabilities during the polymerization of dicyclopentadiene, and for producing a product from polydicyclopentadiene, which product is highly useful to consumers. |
