Sulphonated polystyrene capable, as free acid or as alkali metal salt, of dissolving in water to give a clear solution, is made by treating polystyrene with addition products of sulphuric anhydride and cyclic ethers, e.g. dioxane or thioxane, preferably in the presence of a solvent, e.g. carbon tetrachloride, ethylene dichloride and tetrachlorethane. The product may be recovered from the reaction mixture by (a) adding water, centrifuging and evaporating the aqueous layer to dryness directly or after addition of soda lye; (b) distilling off part of the solvent under reduced pressure, mixing with water, neutralizing with soda lye, steam distilling to remove the remainder of the solvent and evaporating to dryness; or (c) adding methanol, removing solvents by distillation under reduced pressure and at the same time adding water drop-wise to form an aqueous solution of the sulphonated polystyrene, which may be neutralized with soda lye to form the sodium salt. The products may be added to detergents and aqueous dispersions of dyestuffs and germicides or used in leather dyes and dressings or as thickening agents for cloth printing pastes.
|
