Class 109 A ferrule permanently attached to a wire rope 8 comprises a tubular sleeve 1 the internal wall surface of which is formed with a number of axially spaced frusto-conical recesses 2 ... 6, the bases of which are all directed towards the outer end of the ferrule, the ferrule being secured to the rope by metal which bonds itself to the rope and extends into the recesses. The ferrule is slipped over the end of the rope to expose the end portion 9 which is then unlaid, the hemp core removed and the strands straightened to form a "brush". The ferrule is then moved over the "brush", inverted, and molten babbitting metal poured into the outer end 7 of the ferrule. The angle of slope of the recesses is preferably such that the metal extending into each recess carries an equal part of the total load applied to the rope relative to the ferrule. Thus the recess 2 is made with the greatest angle of slope and shortest axial length of any of the recesses, the remaining recesses having progressively smaller angles of slope and greater axial lengths, since the axial creep of the metal increases from the lowest to the highest recess. In the application shown, the ferrule has a rope socket comprising a split tubular member 10 fitted around it and supporting the head 11 of a tool &c. adapted to be lowered down oil well tubing. The member 10 is shouldered at 12 and 13 to engage over the end of the ferrule and under the head of the tool respectively. The socket may be detachably secured to the ferrule by clamping rings &c. |
