The present invention relates to a method for encoding/decoding a binary stream into/from multi-carrier data symbols. In accordance with a first embodiment of the invention, the method comprises the steps, at a transmit side, of grouping carriers into carrier groups; selecting a group constellation diagram for modulation of the carriers of a given carrier group, the selected group constellation diagram being built as a hierarchical sum of I super-imposed constellations vectors having predefined decreasing powers with the P strongest and the Q weakest constellation vectors being omitted; modulating the carriers of the carrier group by means of the selected group constellation diagram; and adjusting P and/or Q parameters per carrier group and per multi-carrier data symbol. In accordance with a second embodiment of the invention, the method comprises the steps, at a receive side, of grouping carriers into carrier groups; selecting a group constellation diagram for demodulation of the carriers of a given carrier group by statistical characterization of the N carriers or part thereof; demodulating the carriers of the carrier group by means of the selected group constellation diagram; and re-evaluating P and/or Q parameters per carrier group and per multi-carrier data symbol.
