<p><P>PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an engine reverse rotation detection method capable of detecting a reverse rotation of an engine with a high degree of versatility, simplicity, and reliability. <P>SOLUTION: An electronic control unit 20 determines whether or not a battery voltage VB of a vehicle battery 10 has dropped in a prescribed voltage range when an engine is started, that is, whether or an expression VBtyp>VB>VBdwn (S106) is established. If the battery voltage VB is determined to have dropped in the prescribed voltage range, it is determined that a reverse rotation of the engine 1 has occurred (S108).
