Replacing a defective section 20 on an overlapping track storage medium (such as a shingled magnetic recording medium) by placing a guard region 14 such that it at least partially overlaps the defective section. Preferably the guard section completely covers the defective section. Placing the guard region may comprise moving an upper or lower guard region of a band to the defective region, creating an additional guard region, or optimising the initial placement of the guard regions. When the guard band is moved, the region(s) covered by the prior location of the guard band(s) may be used to store data. The closest guard track may be selected to be moved to the defective sector. The positions of the other guard bands may also be moved to equalise the size of the bands. The positions of the guard segments may be set based on a minimum or maximum number of tracks in a band; the quality level of each track or section; the quality level of adjacent tracks or sections; the size, width or severity level of a defective section. |
