This disclosure relates to a process for the preparation of 1-[2-(2,4-dimethylphenylsulfanyl)-phenyl]piperazine or a salt thereof. The process includes reacting compound II with compound III and compound IV;
in the presence of a solvent, a base and a palladium catalyst. R, R′, X1, and X2 in the formulas above are defined in the Specification.

A process for the preparation of or a salt thereof, the process comprising reacting compound II wherein R′ represents hydrogen or a mono-valent metal ion, with compound III wherein X1 represents Br and X2 represents I, and compound IV wherein R represents hydrogen, in the presence of a solvent, a base and a palladium catalyst consisting of a palladium source and a phosphine ligand at a temperature between 60° C. and 130° C.
