Classes 110(i) and 110(iii) [Also in Group XXXIV] A stepped balancing piston 1, 2 secured to a vertical rotor shaft 8 of a centrifugal pump, steam, gas or water turbine has teeth loosely engaging co-operating recesses in a housing 3, 4 whereby a working fluid under pressure may pass between the teeth and the recesses and, due to throttling effects, cause the piston to float on a cushion of the fluid and support the weight of the rotor. The teeth clearance of the upper portion 1 of the piston is a maximum when the teeth clearance of the lower portion 2 of the piston is a minimum and vice versa.
