Aspects of the invention include sunscreen formulations that include uniform, rigid, spherical nanoporous calcium phosphate particles. Also provided are methods of making the sunscreen formulations. The sunscreen formulations find use in sunblocking applications.

1. A sunscreen composition comprising:
uniform, spherical, nanoporous calcium phosphate particles having a mean diameter of 2 μm and a surface area ranging from 10 m2/g to 150 m2/g, wherein the uniform, spherical, nanoporous calcium phosphate particles have a porosity in the range of 30% to 85%; and a sunscreen delivery vehicle.
