An approach is provided for discovering proximity-based and/or location-based services over an ad-hoc network. A request to share at least one content item from at least one device is determined. Further, one or more compressed representations of the at least one content item are generated, where the one or more compressed representations include at least one link for retrieving the at least one content item. Furthermore, the one or more compressed representations are broadcast in one or more broadcast messages over an ad-hoc network to one or more other devices.

1. A method comprising facilitating a processing of and/or processing (1) data and/or (2) information and/or (3) at least one signal, the (1) data and/or (2) information and/or (3) at least one signal based, at least in part, on the following:
at least one determination of a request to share at least one content item from at least one device; a generation of one or more compressed representations of the at least one content item, the one or more compressed representations including at least one link for retrieving the at least one content item; and a broadcasting of the one or more compressed representations in one or more broadcast messages over an ad-hoc network to one or more other devices, wherein the ad-hoc network operates in a low-power mode of the at least one device, the one or more other devices, or a combination thereof, and wherein the retrieving of the at least one content item operates in a higher-power mode of the at least one device, the one or more other devices, or a combination thereof.
