A method of preventing or inhibiting biofilm formation by a non-Pseudomonas bacteria on the surface of an article comprising the step of: applying to the surface of the article, a D-form or retro-inverso synthetic pilin peptide containing a disulfide loop having the sequence identified as SEQ ID NO:10 and 0-10 additional residues on either or both the N- or C-terminal side of the loop, in an amount effective to inhibit biofilm formation by such non-Pseudomonas bacterium.
