The present invention relates to a balancing apparatus for performing a balancing function between energy storage units connected in series by connecting in parallel the energy storage units to be balanced by using only a switching device without using a transformer, capacitor, etc, and a method thereof. The present invention relates to a balancing apparatus for performing a balancing function between energy storage units connected in series according to the present invention. The balancing apparatus incudes a first switching module connected to the positive (+) terminal of energy storage units and a second switching module connected to the negative (-) terminal of the energy storage units. Some of the energy storage units are connected in parallel by the on/off operation of the switching units included in the first switching module and the second switching module. Thereby, a balancing function is carried out.
