An aqueous whey solution

Disclosed is an aqueous solution comprising whey, water glass (sodium or potassium silicate), polysaccharides (e.g., lactose) and a modification agent such as a surfactant (e.g., saponin). Also disclosed is the use of the aqueous solution as a flame retardant to reduce the combustibility of building and insulating materials.
