The present invention relates to a composition comprising a Rosa rugosa extract as an active ingredient for preventing or alleviating an alcoholic liver disease. The composition of the present invention has relatively high scavenging activity in scavenging a DPPH radical and an ABTS†radical, has an aspartic acid, asparagine, serin, glycine, arginine or allicin which promotes the generation of alcoholysis enzymes and inhibits the activity of a CYP2E1 enzyme which causes an alcoholic liver damage to obstruct a reduction in the viability of HepG2 cells caused by an alcohol. In addition, the composition has no cytotoxicity in liver cells causing a alcoholic liver damage, thereby being safely used in a pharmaceutical and a food composition.
